Summary: After Krista executes her mother she returns to the house of Chthon where Chase pays a visit to find out what she's been up to.

"I'm sorry, mom, I love you". Krista pressed the trigger. She should be the one to do this last gesture for her mother. She owed her that much. The bullet sped on its way, carrying its lethal dose of garlic extract. It reached its target and Mrs Starr's body exploded in flame at the point of impact. Krista forced herself to watch. In the blink of an eye, the shock on her mother's face had disappeared forever in the heat of the blaze, her body turned to burning embers. Then her mother was nothing more than a pile of ashes in the vague form of a body, on the cement floor of Blade's lair. Krista fell to her knees, bowing her head as if under a great weight. If not for her meddling, her mother would at least have died with some dignity, in her own home, surrounded by her loved ones.

When she raised her head, Shen and Blade were watching her, presumably wondering whether she was going to lose it. She caught that expression on Shen's face that she'd started to see on some humans since she got infected. It was part wariness, part repulsion, part morbid curiosity. She'd seen it on the girl in the diner whose soccer ball had rolled away. Somehow the girl had been able to tell that Krista wasn't what she seemed, maybe she'd sensed that she was facing a predator and that she wasn't safe. And now Shen was watching her, obviously wondering what kind of monster would be able to kill her own mother like this. She averted her eyes, looking for something to gather her mother's ashes with. Suddenly it seemed like the most important thing in the world.

Krista left the jar containing her mother's ashes in Blade's warehouse the next night. What did it say about her life that it was the safest place to keep it for now.
Time to go face the music. She had to get back to the house of Chthon to find out who had been following her and what the fallout was going to be. Ashing the vamp who was pursuing her had taken care of the immediate problem but it was also going to signal to whoever had ordered her followed that she was indeed up to something.

Krista was taken to Marcus immediately when she entered through the front door. When she entered his office she noticed Chase ensconced in a leather chair, apparently fully back to her old self, smirking at her. Marcus was seated behind his desk, very much looking like an urbane business man and not at all like one of the players from the house of Chthon.

"Krista, here you are. Sorry to hear about your mother."
While Krista had been cleaning up and then pretending to rest during the day, Shen had hacked into the hospital records to show that Mrs Starr had died in her home during the night.
Krista looked at Marcus impassively. "She'd had her time. It'll be easier not to have anyone left who can recognize me or ask questions." She answered calmly, shifting her gaze to Chase who was openly staring at her for some kind of reaction. Frederick had said that Chase could feel how strong the presence of Krista's old self was. Doubtless all of them could.

"Krista, have you been noticing someone following you?" Marcus asked casually, still looking at her intently.
"Yes, I did. She was annoying so I ashed her. Is that a problem?" Krista felt the weight of both vampire gazes converging on her, examining her, trying to gauge her reaction. She tried to keep her voice sounding as nonchalant as she could. Shen and Blade had agreed with her suggestion that she should stick to the truth as much as possible.

Marcus looked a little surprised at first, then smiled. "You killed Glynis? I should have guessed she wouldn't be a match for you. Well, Charlotte is going to be a bit upset but that'll teach her to spy on my people." He seemed rather pleased and Krista allowed herself to feel relieved. "Any idea why she was following you in the first place?"
"No clue. Maybe someone found out about my trip to Berlin?" Krista shrugged, letting a bit of her concern show. After all given that she was new to all this, Marcus would expect her to be worried.
Marcus stood up slowly from his chair, eyes locked with hers, adjusting his jacket deliberately. He walked around his desk to face her. Krista forced herself to look as cluelessly submissive as she could, waiting for his next move. Finally he stopped in front of her, considering her carefully before letting a look of sympathetic concern cross his face.
"It's probably the purebloods being nosy. Don't worry about it. The last two days must have been hard on you. Feel free to take a little bit of time." Marcus nodded, dismissing her.

When she left Marcus' office, Krista went to her room. She suspected that Marcus and Chase were going to discuss what to do about her once she was gone, so she wasn't surprised to hear a knock on her door after a little while. The door opened to reveal Chase, looking at her mischieviously.
"Chase…what can I do for you?" Krista rose from the bed where she’d sat upon entering the room, still too overwhelmed by recent events to start figuring out what to do next.

The blonde vampire stalked into the room gracefully. She looked around unhurriedly, as if to check whether Krista had brought any personal touch to it. It was still the same anonymous room. Chase turned back towards Krista, stepping right up to her, bringing a hand up to brush the side of her face where her scars had been.

"Your scars are gone…" Chase's eyes fell to the brunette's arm, taking the healed hand in both of her much paler ones, stroking it silently.

"Your hand is completely recovered also. You must have fed while you were away?"
Chase had obviously stopped to find out what she'd been up to and yet Krista couldn't help warming up to the blonde vampire's touchy feely demonstration of concern. She simply nodded and started to shift back to remove her hand.

Chase anticipated her, moving in to speak softly into her ear while she continued her soothing motions on her arm. "Don't worry, it's normal to be affected when you lose your last ties to the world of humans. We all go through it, especially when it happens so soon after the change. We're your family now."

Krista closed her eyes, feeling the tears she hadn't been able to shed earlier spring to her eyes. She hid her face in the crook of Chase's neck and let herself be held for a moment. It didn't matter that Chase would probably kill her if she knew what Krista had done, for a little while Krista would choose to believe the comfort that was being offered was sincere. Hell, knowing Chase it probably was, for about one minute.

A fitting epilogue to the episode and very understandable reactions from Krista. Very nice.

Glad you liked. I started wondering about the next episode and it became clear how much trouble Krista is in when she gets back to the house of Chthon, not to mention when she tries to deal with everything that's happened in her life.

Thanks for wanting to read more. I think I will write more Khase. Chase is insisting on more time with Krista :).

Ooooh, this is a great start! And I loved the focus on Shen watching Krista after she pulled the trigger like he didn't recognize her, there was a strong feeling of Krista being "the other" there, and it totally shows how with the last of her ties to the human world scattering so spectacularly she would move toward Chthon.

Also, I liked that Marcus was amused and proud that she killed Glynis. He could so love to stick it to Charlotte. "That's for making me sit on the wee little couch, bitch!"

And the Chase/Krista interaction at the end was beautifully done. After what she's been through, it's completely natural that Chase's 'touchy feely demonstration of concern' (love it) woudl effect her strongly.

Hell, knowing Chase it probably was, for about one minute.

I loved this line because it's so Chase. She's all caressing your face one moment, and then hissing threats and plotting your death the next. She's awesome. It also seems to fit considering what Frederick said about Chase being sensitive to people's emotions that she'd know that Krista was open to her touchy feely-ness at that time.

Anyway, I'm gonna stop rambling now. Loved it and hope your planning to continue!

with the last of her ties to the human world scattering so spectacularly she would move toward Chthon
seems inevitable even if it's just one stage of her journey.

"That's for making me sit on the wee little couch, bitch!"
Lol! My minions are more powerful than your minions, bitch!

She's all caressing your face one moment, and then hissing threats and plotting your death the next.
Love that about Chase. Luckily Krista may just be getting to the point where she's willing to overlook the death plots in order to get the touchy feely. Not sure I'll be able go there, but you know I want to :D.

I really like this. I love that Krista suspects Chase's motives for comforting her, but doesn't care as she is just too exhausted. With Krista's ties to her previous life gone, if Chase were to make the effort to connect with Krista I really believe that Krista's alliances would be in danger of shifting. Excellent fic.

*blushes* Thanks, so glad you enjoyed it.

With Krista's ties to her previous life gone, if Chase were to make the effort to connect with Krista I really believe that Krista's alliances would be in danger of shifting.

I really hope the show dares to go there in the next ep. All the conditions are in place. I figure since Marcus is too busy with house of Chthon business to deal with the emotional state of a newborn, it's up to his trusty second-in-command, Chase, to make sure the flock is happy and productive :D.

I love Chase being the one to offer comfort unexpectedly, no matter how long the sympathy might have lasted. I thought you did a great job with Krista's voice too, capturing her inner conflict/vulnerability but also toughness.

You never know with Chase when she's going to be nice to Krista or put her in danger. That's part of what makes her so hot ;).
