Summary: Ashley's screening Spencer's calls after her Dad's death.
Warning: Spoilers for Season 2 Pilot. Not sure what's going on with Ashley this season. Trying to keep her focused on stuff that matters, like dealing with her dad's death and her girlfriend.

After driving Spencer home the previous night, she’d gone back to her Dad’s penthouse. She’d let herself in with her security code. All traces of their earlier dinner had already been efficiently removed by the catering service. The penthouse had barely seemed occupied, nothing out of place, as if her father had been on his way out of town. She’d waited all night in the flickering glow of the TV for reality to set in, huddled on the sofa, a growing, relentless dread carving its way into the pit of her stomach as the hours passed by. The news breaks had kept playing the same footage of the accident, with occasionally a short clip from an old interview with the band in happier days. Finally when the first light of dawn broke on the horizon, she’d given up. Daylight made it real.

Her first thought when leaving her father’s apartment had been to go over to Spencer’s. Parked in front of the Carlins’ house, looking up at Spencer’s bedroom window, she’d felt untethered: frantic to be with Spencer and oddly detached at the same time, unable to even imagine what it must feel like to be part of a family like Spencer’s. After a while, sanity had returned and she’d driven away.

Back in her bedroom, she’d taken her shoes off, too exhausted for anything else. Hiding under the covers, she’d closed eyes burning from lack of sleep. All that Ashley’d wanted, had been to abandon herself to the emotions that had taken hold of her during her vigil. There was the inescapable sorrow and fear, but also the persistent and inexplicable resentment. It was such a fucked up mess. She kept teetering between anger and emptiness.

Later that day, when Spencer had stopped by, she’d gotten a first hand taste of her girlfriend’s explosive mood. The brunette cringed as she remembered her harsh words. Spencer had not deserved her outburst.

It was completely dark now as she was walking back to her car, retracing her earlier steps. The strip, fully illuminated, was reborn after dark, the familiar daytime landmarks now eclipsed by the neons from the ubiquitous late night bars. The impersonal darkness was a relief, smoothing out the edges, erasing all the memories, good and bad. The cool California night air pierced through her light jacket.

When she got to Spencer’s house, Ashley was puzzled by the shameless tears running down her face as she begged Paula to let her see Spencer. Her grief got her what she desperately needed, a truce with Paula and time with Spencer.

Hey, I just caught up with this and am enjoying it. I'm a sucker for rehasing what happened in an ep and adding deperately needed details. I liked this line in particular: The impersonal darkness was a relief, smoothing out the edges, erasing all the memories, good and bad.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks...I think unless I can make some sense out of these past few episodes, I'm going to start not caring about these characters anymore. Which would be sad. I hope to get to the fluff soon though :).
